Common but not Popular: Hepatitis B and C
By admin | May 9, 2008
What do 500 million people worldwide have in common?
Hepatitis.
It’s not a joke, it’s a horrible statistic. Hepatitis exists in strains A, B, C, D, E, F and G, with the most common of these being B and C. Both strains can be spread through blood to blood contact, sexual intercourse and breastfeeding where at least one party is infected and can lead to Cirrhosis, a symptom seen in chronic cases of Hepatitis.
The worst thing about these statistics is that they can be helped but they aren’t. Health organisations have the means to cure everyone who walks through their doors with Hepatitis, yet they concentrate their efforts on treating other diseases, leaving this one to silently spread through millions of people.
The World Hepatitis Alliance launches their inaugural campaign on May 19th this year in order to gain the treatment that Hepatitis sufferers so desperately need and deserve. Their website, www.aminumber12.org provides the public with a place to sign their name and raise awareness of the disease. More information on Hepatitis B and C can be found at http://hepccentre.org.uk/awareness.htm.
